Yarm 1914

Wiliam Grundy Appleton was born in 1885, 5th child of William and Margaret Appleton of Hilton. William was a tailor by trade. In 1891 William lived with his parents and brothers John Edwin 11, Charles Aubrey aged 9 and Frederick James aged 3 and his sister Florence aged 8. His eldest brother Albert William was living with his grandparents John and Mary Shepherd in Harbottle in Northumberland. By 1901, Albert had returned to Hilton and been replaced by Charles who later married and settled in Harbottle. John was similarly living away from home but had returned by 1911 when he was recorded as a farmer. William decided to take up his fathers profession and became a tailor. He married Annie Jeff in Stainton in Cleveland on 13 August 1913 and moved in with her parents at the Cross Keys Leven Bridge, Yarm. WG was 31 when he signed up on 1915. He was called for service on 7 February 1917 During his time in France he was injured and admitted to Marselles Stationary Hospital on 7 April 1918. He was demobed on 18 November 1919 to Hilton.
